The all-new Toyota 86 - Yours for under R300 000

Toyota South Africa Motors has just announced prices of one of the most eagerly awaited cars, the all-new Toyota 86, which officially debuts locally with the standard model on the 9th July. This will be followed shortly by two high-spec versions later in the month.

With a starting price of just R298 500 (incl. VAT) for the standard model, this unique two-door 2+2 sports car represents outstanding value for money and positions the car well within reach of those wanting an alternative to the predictable set of hot hatches.

At the top end of the range are the two highly specified versions (a manual and a six-speed auto with paddle shift), equipped with all the trimmings including Smart Start (keyless entry system), leather/alcantara upholstery, fully automatic climate control system and 17-inch alloy wheels - to list just a few of the items on the standard menu. The 86 High manual will retail for R329 400 while the 86 High 6-speed Auto will carry a sticker price of just R346 500. Please note that all 86 models come with a four-year / 60 000km service plan as standard.

All 86 models are equipped with the newly-developed Subaru 2.0-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine. This is the world’s first horizontally opposed engine with Toyota’s revolutionary Direct Injection 4-stroke petrol System (D-4S). The results are impressive for a normally-aspirated powerplant: 147kW at 7000rpm and 205Nm of torque at 6400-6600rpm.

“The 86 is so much more than just another product, it signals a completely new direction for Toyota,” says Kerry Roodt, General Manager of Marketing Communications. “Here you have a car that’s designed entirely around the driver; a car that exists purely for those who regard driving as a passion rather than a necessity. These cars have, of course, always existed, but for the first time a motor manufacturer is making this much automotive fun available to as wide an audience as possible – that’s genius!”

From the backseat

When in 2013 will we see the new Corolla in S.A. ?

147kw is weak, look at the other manufacturers... Toyota still hasnt met the bench mark !

Toyota have done it again, can't wait 2 see this in the metal!

Hi Johan, we don't have any details just yet. We will be sure to let you know once we hear.

Afternoon Trent. We hear you and like many others who have voiced the same concern we understand your concern. However, the new Toyota 86 has been built for driving experience- Low to the road, responsive handling, the rumble of the engine. Take a test drive when the vehicle is launched, we'd love to hear your thoughts :)

Will TSAM bring a TRD version of the 86?

Will TSAM launch a TRD version of the 86?

Don't worry Trent, there must be a guy in Benoni that is waiting to stick a turbo onto it. Also remember this beauty is naturally aspirated.

i need a factory order. BLOGGER.

Perfect now to confirm with my dealer on that test drive.Secondaly i notice this test track is close to my hood its about time we see some action on it.I know its a private testing curcuit for TSA but still let fans and future onwers experince it!!

Hey guys, this is a great car but sorry to say this, all those things you mentioned just seem very Subaru to me. "driving experience- Low to the road, responsive handling, the rumble of the engine." All very much Subaru.

Will warranties be voided if aftermarket wheels, coilovers and exhuasts are fitted? Or is this a dealer specific decision?

how can you say this car is weak? It has less power than a G6 gti ed 35, and still beats it in a 1/4 mils, stock for stock, both manual transmissions! G6 gti ed 35 manual: 1/4 mile: 15.16. ( g6 gti ed 35: 2.0 Litre turbo 173kw)

gt86, ( non turbo 147kw) 14.9 seconds.

Can we get the GT86 RC model from japan for R199 000...thats just in my prize range.

We would love to see a boosted version of this. Will TSA be bringing any TRD goodies for this car?

147kw is weak?
Dude itz NORMALLY ASPIRATED!!!
i don't think you understand that turbo charged Vehicles fall in a different class...
can you point out a single vehicle that can push the figures of this car... stock... i dnt think so...
this car is amazing and has plenty room for aftermarket modification....
Great car...

Early in 2013, first quarter hopefully.

We're looking into it, Marc. No decision has been made yet.

@Trent It's a non-turbo 2.0 pushing out 147kW. Whereas the 2.0 Turbo GTi pushes out 155kW. 8kW difference. I would say that's pretty damn neat.

I'll give it a test drive since at the top of my list is the 120d coupe...

Anyone remember the Honda S2000, 2L & 2.2L - 177Kw
or the Corolla RXI 1.6L - 115Kw ...
So a 2L - 147Kw engine is a little disappointing considering over 13 years have passed.

This car really looks mean. Finally Toyota has come out with a car that can compete with the likes of the GTI,OPC and the Renault F1.

Hoping to see a turbo charged version straight from the factory with all the TRD goodies on it soon.

Finally we can say goodbye to the ugly submarine called a corolla that Toyota has.

Can't wait - have been waiting eversince news of the GT86. Have mine on order - its going to great!

On the press car that was here a few months back, it had a bodykit and a big wing. In Japan they refer to it as a "factory aero kit" see link --> http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2750

Will this be available from Toyota SA ?

Also, when is the launch date in Cape Town?

Cant wait to see this on the road, got my first glimpse of it at the Johannesburg International Motorshow last year!

just test drove the 86 at freeway toyota near gold reef city, ordered one :-)

Highly descrіptіve aгticle, I enjoyed thаt bit.
Will there be a part 2?

I love the 86 love it ,but havent drivin it yet would love to buy one, once again toyota has priced it out of reach , at 298000 thats way to rich, and why advertise it at under 300000 when you buy it , its dealers fees and all that crap.If it was priced at 250000 or under then we talking up yours south africa and toyota

up yours toyota for pricing this great car out of reach for most people, i love this car been following this car for a very long time a i love it , but wont beable to afford it .Its priced like the gti which has more for the money, why?

hi there

took delivery of my car abt 2 weeks ago. Beautiful car. gets lots of attention. Handles like a bomb. Only 1 gripe: Why did TSA put a lousy ex-Hilux radio in? Looks terrible and out of place.

How long is the wait? I ordered one lastweek and no-one can tell me....

i ordered my toyota 86, 3 weeks and its here on 10 november 2012, luckily there was a 6AT high spec pearl white on the water on way to sa and they buyer cancelled, didnt want to wait any longer and took a std spec, now this one is mine, coming to cape town :) The jhb stores had a waiting list of 30 people already so i made a few calls.

Great news, Shane! Let us know when you receive delivery of your new best friend.

There's no need to say no more. The simple fact that it has the Toyota mark on it is a guarantee for fine quality. I currently own an old Toyota model and I don't plan to switch to anything new first because I can't afford it and secondly because I care about this car. I am actually looking for diy car tips to make it look just like I want it.
