Toyota outshines direct rivals in 2011 Synovate Quality Awards
• Toyota ranked best overall in volume passenger car brand category;
• Toyota ranked best overall in light commercial vehicle brand category;
• RAV4 scores new record low product quality problem score of 45 in recreational vehicle category.
Toyota South Africa Motors was once again identified as the manufacturer of the best quality vehicles in the volume passenger car and light commercial vehicle segments. This time it was supported by the 2011 Synovate Quality Awards for Product Quality.
The Synovate Quality Awards measures vehicle quality by calculating the number of vehicle problems per 100 vehicles of a specific make and model. The lower this score, identified as PP100, the better the perceived quality of the vehicle. Synovate collectively engage with over 33 000 new vehicle owners every year, making this evaluation the most comprehensive of its kind in South Africa.
According to the most recent Synovate study, Toyota scored two Gold Awards in passenger vehicle segments, trumped only by Mercedes-Benz with four awards. In the Recreational Vehicle category, the spoils was shared equally between Toyota and Mercedes-Benz and in the Light Commercial Vehicle category the Hilux won all but one category in which it competes.
Based on the impressive overall performance, Toyota was selected as the Best Volume Passenger Car Brand Overall, the Best One Ton Single Cab Light Commercial Vehicle Overall, the Best One Ton Double Cab Light Commercial Vehicle Overall and the Best Local Plant Manufacturing Light Commercial Vehicles.
“We are extremely proud of our manufacturing plant in Prospecton, Durban,” says Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Toyota SA Motors. “The Synovate Quality Awards is a confirmation of the hard work we have put into our manufacturing plant and it supports our view that all Toyota vehicles are ‘Manufactured in Toyota’ and all comply with the same exact safety and quality standards.”
Highlights from the Synovate Quality Awards include the RAV4, which was singled out for scoring the lowest PP100 score on record in the recreational vehicle segment at 35 PP100. The Hilux was also identified as a top quality product with the petrol single cab scoring a record low 45 PP100.
“The overall product quality scores, as measured by various institutions, have improved over the past decade. We are proud of the fact that we could, through the Toyota Production System and the principle of Kaizen or continuous improvement, maintain our position as overall sales market leader and market leader in quality in the volume passenger vehicle segments,” says Hamman.
