Limpopo wilderness
What Limpopo lacks in commercial excess is certainly made up for in the abundant wildlife and natural African beauty of its landscape. There is no end of trails and spectacular off-road sights in this province. It isToyota Hilux country.
Rust de Winter 4x4 Bundu trail
This two-day guided trail was also pegged as one of South Africa’s three ‘Terror Trails’ by SA 4x4 magazine.
It’s about 80k north of Pretoria and located on a 27ha property along the banks of the Elands River.
The trail covers 80km of some pretty challenging mountainous terrain, with rewarding views and thrills aplenty. It’s ranked from Grade 3 to Grade 4.
The best time to go is in the summer when the streams are full and clear.
Pack camping equipment and drinking water.
Also, be sure not to miss the annual Toyota Rust de Winter Jamboree from 29 April to 2 May 2011. It’s a full-on fun-filled family weekend with supervised activities for the kids. For the adults, there’ll be a 4x4 gymkhana section on the Saturday and a 60km mountain route on the Sunday.
There are four 4x4 trails to explore at the Kruger National Park; Madlabantu, Mananga, the Northern Plains trail and Nonokani.
These self-guided trails are not technically challenging in the least. What you will experience is a serene game drive far from the madding crowds.
Madlabantu features a route through a large plain where you can expect to spot buffalo, elephant and white rhino.
Mananga requires a bit of caution as you cross over some wetlands. It also features a waterhole at the two windmills which attracts a good variety of game during the winter.
The Northern Plans trail will be a winner for avid bird-watchers with rare bird species like crested guinea fowl, Gorgeous Bush-shrike and grey-headed kingfisher.
The Nonokani trail is a leisurely drive that takes you through bushwillow woodlands to the Reënvoël Dam, along the Olifants River, ending at the Sable Dam.
The trails can be booked from the following camps; Madlabantu from Pretoriuskop Camp, Mananga from Satara Camp, Northern Plains trail from Shingwedzi Camp and Nonokani from Phalaborwa Gate.
Keep a check on weather reports, as the trails do close after inclement weather.
