4x4 Trails That Will Make Your Hilux Happy! Part 7: North West

Stunning views of the North West

There is treasure in the North West, both natural and man-made. From its fossils, gold and diamond mines to blingy Sun City, it’s a destination for dreamers and thrill-seekers. When you’re not being risky on a roulette wheel, spin the tyres on your Toyota Hilux and take a chance on some of the province’s 4x4 trail offerings.

Doornrivier 4x4 Trails

If you’ve already got the family packed up and loaded in the Hilux for a trip to the Madikwe Game Reserve, consider stopping over at Doornrivier 4x4 Adventures for an off-road play detour.
They’re about 12km outside of Zeerust on the R49 (Gaborone/Madikwe Game Reserve road) and offer scenic driving along with technical challenges in their four 4x4 trails.
Expect mountainous and rocky terrain, as well as bushveld and grassland.

Moegatle 4x4 Trail

SA4x4 magazine hailed Moegatle as one of South Africa’s three “terror trails” (the other two being Rust de Winter in Limpopo and the Rhino Challenge on the Berakah trail in Parys).
About 30km from Brits, the trail is rated Grade 2 to Grade 5 and is typified by 34km of sandy, rocky terrain meshed with mud and water.
If you’re not quite ready for the ‘terror’ in ‘terror trail’, there is a bypass route for each obstacle.
Other less terrifying activities include game viewing, mountain biking, bird watching and fishing (catch and release).

Karee Krans 4x4 Trail

This one’s perfect for an activity-packed weekend getaway with the family. Book a chalet or camp out at Karee Krans.
It’s 42km from Rustenburg, and apart from their three 4x4 trails, there’s swimming, abseiling, horse riding, canoeing and foefie sliding.
And while you’re at all this adventuring, take in a bit of history as well. Karee Krans was the last place where the Boers gathered before the battle of Moedwil during the Second Boer War.
The trails vary in difficulty and you can tackle them solo or with a guide.

From the backseat

The Friday Avi Club goes to Atlantis Dunes every Friday afternoon, they don't mind people joining in. In the Western Cape, don't miss out on the Boegoeberg Trail near Redelinghuys, Marcuskraal and various others. There are also a magnitude of roads to follow in the Cederberg and onward towards Sutherland. All of these are within a 2 - 4 hour distance from Cape Town. There is accommodation available and all year round the scenery and roads change with the weather, so go more than once! You are welcome to contact me for details on costs, accommmodation and recommended routes.
