Karoo
4x4s were made to tame rugged and sparse landscapes such as this, but more than the challenging terrain and abundant natural wonder, South Africa’s largest province offers the quiet serenity of open space.
Experience the sheer vastness of the Northern Cape in your Toyota Hilux by exploring its five regions; Diamond Fields, Namakwa, Karoo, Green Kalahari and Kalahari.
The following is just a small sampling of 4x4 trails in the Northern Cape.
Diamond Coast Shipwreck and Strandveld Trails
Plan in advance to join an organised guided tour and explore dunes and shipwrecks in what used to be a heavily restricted area, The Diamond Coast on the Atlantic.
Between the coasts of Koingnaas and Kleinzee, take on sand and rock on the 40km guided Shipwreck trail and visit the vestiges of the ships, the Arosa, the Border and the Piratiny.
The eco-friendly Strandvel Trail will take you over thrilling mobile dunes.
Plan your trip to fall within the flower season, between July and October, for more than a few spectacular sights.
Experience true solitude on this trail between Ceres and Calvinia.
The Kliphuiskloof Trail is a circular 60km route on the Elandsvlei farm and will take you through what some off-road enthusiasts have described as, “akin to a mini Grand Canyon.”
As one of the trail’s exits is on to the road connecting the R355 to Calvinia, you can tackle Kliphuiskloof on your route to other thrills and adventures in the Northern Cape.
Within the epic boundaries of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, lies the Nossob 4x4 Eco Trail. On it, you can expect to encounter wildlife and natural beauty in areas not open to the general public.
This popular trail will require you to book at least eight months in advance.
It spans 214km and will take you four days and three nights.
It’s a fully self-catered trail, so do pack plenty of water for drinking and washing.
